 Regal Shield

A perennial, tropical evergreen known for its sprawling leaves, and can be grown indoors or outdoors.  A type of elephant ear.  It can reach 20 inches long and produces a deep velvety green color with bright green veins.  The underside of the leaf is a green-purple that gives this Alocasia its unique look.  It prefers the morning sun when grown outdoors They thrive in warm humid conditions.  Indoors place near a bright sunny window.  Both indoors and outdoors too much afternoon sun can scorch its leaves.  Outdoors work well on a covered patio, and a balcony in indirect light.  Cold Hardy zone 9.  Drought tolerant but like most other plants prefers a regular watering schedule.  Said to be heat and humidity-tolerant.  Highly sensitive to cold temperatures so plant in a protected area, bring it indoors, or cover it with frost cloth during our brief cold snaps.  Likes moist well-draining soil.  Toxic to pets and children.  Said to be deer resistant.   Fertilizer with a good granular slow-release fertilizer.  Remember to follow the manufacturer's instructions for application.
