Japanese Blueberry Tree Elaeocarpus Decipiens
A small but beautiful tree. Has an appealing Christmas tree look with tropical foliage. Many people are unaware of this majestic tree. It has low maintenance requirements and a sort of small canopy. It is considered evergreen. It makes a great substitute for holly or oak trees. It produces dense lush green foliage and a white flower in the spring that is replaced by dark blue inedible berries in the fall and winter. However, small animals and birds do feed on them. You will see an occasional bright red leaf appear! Most people keep it full to the ground while others like the standard tree look. It can be manicured into a formal design or left in its natural state which is a more eclectic appearance. They are versatile and can be used in many ways. They can be an effective privacy screen, a specimen tree, used as a backdrop for small plants, or even placed in natural groupings. Cold Hardy zone 9. Slow to moderate growth and can reach a height of 25 feet at maturity. They prefer a full sun to a partial sun location in the landscape. They like a regular watering schedule and well-draining soil. They are said to be drought-tolerant once established. They have a low tolerance to salt so if you live on the coast plant them on the western side of your home. Fertilize in the spring, summer, and fall with a good quality slow-release granular fertilizer. Remember to follow the manufacturer's instructions for application.
