Dombeya Seminole aka Florida hydrangeas
Sometimes called the tropical hydrangea. Its flowers are very similar to the hydrangeas that we know from living up north. The flowers are pink to rose color. This is a WINTER bloomer! Just when you need some color. At maturity, the Dombeya can reach approximately 7 feet tall and wide. Plant in a place that will accommodate its growth. With some pruning, you can keep it 5 feet tall. The Dombeya loves a full to partial shade location in your landscape. Remember the more sun - the fuller the bush - and the more blooms. Prune your plant for size in early spring once it has stopped blooming. Cold hardy in zone 9B. This plant doesn't tolerate frost so cover during brief cold snaps or plant in a protected location. Said to be fairly drought tolerant. It has a low tolerance to salt and is said to be deer-resistant. Many grow dombeya in large containers on their porch, patio, or inside their pool cage for the winter color. Attracts wildlife, and butterflies flock to it during the cooler winter months. Hummingbirds and bees love it too! Drought tolerant but as with other plants prefers a regular watering schedule. It's a mid-size shrub that grows in a mounded shape that eventually can reach 8 feet in height with a 10-foot spread without pruning. Some prune into small trees. Some Dombeya produce upright flowers and other varieties produce flowers that grow downward. Plant in the landscape or grow in containers and spot in the landscape or on your patio, pool deck, or lanai. Fertilize in the spring, summer, and fall with a good granular slow-release fertilizer. Remember to follow the manufacturer's instructions for application.
