Bottle Palm aka Hyophorbe lagenicaulis
Named for its odd uniquely shaped trunk. Great for small areas in your landscape. They reach maturity at 5 to 7 feet and can grow larger in their happy place. Likes a full sunspot in the landscape but can be used in partial shade but remember too much shade will cause the trunk/crown shaft to grow in an elongated fashion and lean toward the light. Bottles are NOT self-cleaning. However, it grows so slowly that you will hardly need to trim an old frond. Said to be Cold-hardy in temps 20 to 30 degrees. Cover your bottle with a frostcloth during our brief cold snaps. Freezing temps or frost for a few hours generally won't kill a bottle but it will burn back the majority of its leaves. These unique beauties are highly salt-tolerant which makes them a perfect choice for a coastal landscape. Bottles are drought tolerant but do like a regular watering schedule. They love a full-sun location in your yard/landscape. They love well-draining soil and also love a beach environment. They work well inland too. They work well as a specimen/focal point in a small or large garden bed. They look amazing in a circular drive. You can use them to line your driveway or walkway. You can flank the entrance to your home...one on each side. They will do well in a pool cage in a container or in your planting areas. The Bottle Palm grows well in a container for many many years due to its slow growth. Container growing allows you to move them around your landscape or indoors during a brief cold snap. You can grow these inside your home to create that tropical look indoors. In containers, you can put bottle palms on your porch, patios, lanai, or pool cage. In many years when they outgrow the container, you can move outdoors in your landscape. They work in a Formal, Traditional, Mediterranean, or Tropical landscape. Fertilize spring, summer, and fall with a good slow-release palm fertilizer, and add manganese to your process as with other palms. Remember to follow the manufacturer's instructions for application.
